Hi OUTM Community! Have you ever watched the Reality TV show ALONE on Netflix? Before today, I hadn’t either. To be honest, it is not a show that I would binge watch, but for some reason, today was different. After watching like the 3rd of 4th episode, I was like Lord, there must be something you want me to get from this, because, I could not turn it off, so I continued to watch.
Alone is a survival reality TV series that places skilled survival participants in some of the most remote and unforgiving environments in the world. The season that I ran into was season 11 which was filmed in the Arctic Circle; it was the northernmost location in the shows history, which means the conditions were the most severe. Each contestant is dropped off completely alone with a limited number of survival items and must document their own experience without any camera crew or outside assistance. The objective is simple but brutal: survive longer than everyone else while facing extreme weather, food scarcity, and physical exhaustion.
Beyond the physical challenge, the show explores the psychological and emotional toll of isolation. Contestants grapple with loneliness, fear, hunger, and deep self-reflection, often confronting personal limits and inner struggles. Many leave not because of injury, but because the mental weight of solitude becomes overwhelming, making Alone as much a study of human resilience and character as it is a test of survival skills. Whew!
As I continued to watch, I picked my favorite contestant which was Timber Cleghorn. Initially, I was cheering him on because of how resourceful and skilled he truly was, but what captured my heart the most, was his love for God. Honestly, both of the final contestants in that season had a relationship with God to some degree, but from the very beginning, his stood out to me. In the hardest of times, in the roughest of climates his response was always positive, he prayed and he stood on Psalm 27 which is labeled in the Bible as “An Exuberant Declaration of Faith”
His faith was so clear and evident it bought tears to my eyes. Watching him traverse through those elements while having no other choice but to trust God to work through him, encouraged me. You literally saw how God provided him everything he needed while giving him the strategy to survive. Although he was there alone, he was NOT there alone! God was with him. Isaiah 41:10 (NIV): "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand”.
Although, Timber did not win the money, he definitely won in my book, and let me tell you why. He recognized that his alone time God was far more important than any amount of money he could have won ($500K). What he said was profound to me. He said he "received everything he has asked for except the money", During his time alone, he said he received a vision for his future, and he was ready to start that immediately. He understood that with God, all things are possible Matthew 19:26 and even though he did not leave with the prize money, he trusted that God would still provide.
Sometimes we go through seasons of being alone, and although that time may feel challenging or even lonely, the reality is: when we respond to it as an opportunity to spend time with God without distraction to align our thoughts with Him, it creates space for Him to speak to us and through us. During that time of being set apart, the Lord becomes our light and our salvation, whom shall we fear? During that time he will give us a vision, a plan, and a strategy, transforming what we once felt as terrifying into something purposeful and satisfying.
